A team of Cuban and Candian researchers may have discovered what may be a six thousand-year-old city, submerged in deep waters off the west coast of Cuba.

Paulina Zelitsky, offshore engineer, and her husband Paul Weinzweig utilized advanced video and sonar apparatus to locate “some kind of megaliths you'd find on Stonehenge or Easter Island,” the couple stated on an interview.

“Some structures within the complex may be as long as 400 meters wide and as high as 40 meters,” Paul Weinzweig stated. “Some are sitting on top of each other. They show very distinct shapes and symmetrical designs of a non-natural kind. We've shown them to scientists in Cuba, the U.S., and elsewhere, and nobody has suggested they are natural”, he concluded.

Anthropologists connected to the Cuban Academy of Sciences stated that photographs from the footage vividly displays “symbols and inscriptions,” Paul Weinzweig stated. However, the symbols have yet to be deciphered or identified.

According to the anthropologists, the photographs resembled pyramidal designs of Aztec and Mayan temples in Mexico.

Paul Weinzweig stated that it's too soon to speculate conclusions from the existing evidence. The researchers planned another foray to the site — off the Guanahacabibes Peninsula on Cuba's western tip. The aspirations to return, bringing along the first deep-water mobile excavator, were purposely designed to function for on-site archeological explorations.

Geologists have also speculated that a land bridge connecting Cuba to Mexico's Yucatan peninsula, long ago as parts of the Cuban island, was considered submerged to the sea in the past.

The structures are on a plateau (an area of relatively level high ground) that forms the bottom of what is considered a volcano, 650 to 700 meters beneath the water surface, and along what is a geological fault line.

“It's well known that ancient civilizations liked to build at the base of volcanoes because the land is fertile. So that's suggestive,” according to Paul Weinzweig.

One tantalizing possibility is that if the legendary sunken continent of Atlantis is ever proven to have existed, these structures may have been affected by the same cataclysm.

Paul Weinzweig stated that more research is required. “We'd prefer to stay away from that subject. This is something of great potential scientific interest, but it must involve serious authorities on ancient civilizations.”

The exact age of the underwater site is also yet to be identified, although Cuban archeologists in 1966 excavated a land-based megalithic structure on the western coast, near the latest underwater discovery, claimed to have dated from 4000 BC. “Based on that and other geological information, we're speculating that these are 6,000 years old,” Paul Weinzweg explained.

If that dating estimate proves to be exact, it would indicate that an ancient civilization had built and designed these structures in the Americas only 500 years after human settlements first became organized in states and cities.
